Flu Season Came 7 Weeks Early: Your SW Calgary Flu Forecast (and Where to Get Your Flu Shot at No Cost)
Flu season didn’t wait for winter this year. Canada’s 2026–27 flu season started about seven weeks earlier than usual, according to infectious disease experts quoted by Global News on October 23, 2026. If you live in Evergreen, Bridlewood, Shawnessy, Millrise, Somerset, Silverado or Woodbine, here is your SW Calgary flu forecast, and the simplest way to stay dry: a flu shot at no cost to you, funded by the Province, at Evergreen Compounding Pharmacy.
The forecast: flu activity is already above the epidemic threshold
Health Canada data reported by Global News showed that 6.1% of flu tests came back positive in the week ending October 17, 2026, compared with just 0.8% in the same week of 2025. Public health considers 5% the epidemic threshold. Last year, Canada didn’t cross that line until mid-November.
- Main strain this season: H1N1. This year’s flu vaccine is designed to cover it.
- Why it matters: experts estimate the flu shot lowers the risk of hospitalization or death by almost half.
- Alberta’s response: pharmacies were told to start giving doses as soon as they arrived, and the provincially funded program opened on October 19.
Your extended outlook (without a flu shot)
Sneezy Monday, feverish Tuesday, achy Wednesday, and a couple of sick days you didn’t plan for. The flu usually hits suddenly with fever, body aches and exhaustion, and it can keep you in bed for days. For older adults, young children, pregnant people and anyone living with diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease, it can also lead to serious complications like pneumonia.
Your umbrella: a flu shot at no cost in SW Calgary
- Who: everyone aged 5 and older at our pharmacy. The flu vaccine is funded by the Province and available at no cost to all Albertans 6 months and older; children 6 months to 4 years are immunized through public health (call Health Link at 811).
- How: walk in during our open hours (subject to vaccine supply), or call (403) 930-1722 to book and skip the wait.
- How long: about 15 minutes, including a short wait after your shot so we can make sure you feel well.
- What to bring: your Alberta Health Care card and a list of your current medications. Wear short sleeves or a loose top.
- Also ask about: COVID-19 vaccines for eligible Albertans, often given at the same visit.
Why this week, not next month
Your body needs about two weeks after the shot to build protection. With flu already circulating, every week you wait is a week you are exposed without that protection. Getting it now means you are covered before Halloween parties, holiday gatherings and the busiest weeks of the season.
Got a team? We’ll bring the umbrella to you
If your workplace, school, charity or condo building has 15 or more people who want a flu shot, our pharmacists can run an on-site flu clinic anywhere in Calgary, at no cost to your organization with one week’s notice.
